DakshinaChitra celebrates the Marghazi & Village Heritage Festival once again and will comes alive to the rhythms, movements and colours of different folk dances of South India between the 25th dec 2008 â€“ 12th jan 2009. This special festival coincides with the New Year Celebration and has been tailor-made to suit the festive mood and there will be dancing all day â€“ village style. This village festival offers unique opportunity to witness the rich and varied folk art forms of South India at one go. Different styles of folk dances representing the four southern states will perform throughout this season. Chittmela is a traditional folk orchestra popular in the remote southern parts of Karnataka. It is named Chittmela because the drummer while performing uses small footsteps resembling the flight of a butterfluy."Chitte" means butterfly in kanada - hence the name Chittmela. The main performer plays folk melodies in an instrument known as mukhaveena supported by drums and cymbals and other singers and dancers.

Ayya Art Gallery is organising Larger Than Life, an exhibition of paintings by Prakash Karmakar. The usual aspects of life seem to take exaggerated, larger-than-life forms in artist Prakash Karmakar's imagination. The Kolkata based artist's latest works are themed dominantly on mythology, humans and beasts. While sticking to the partially abstract and figurative techniques of painting, the artist has applied disproportion as one of the factors to appeal to the eye. Landscapes, particularly natural, take on a vibrant colour pal ette, with bright oranges, yellows, blues and greens with negligible gradient and shading, but plenty of contrast. Their kid-art-like sketching instantly arises curiosity and interpretation. The figurines of humans and Gods that comprise the series also adhere to Prakash's usual style of distortion and even a bit of erotica. The colours are used imaginatively to create contrast and surrealism. Graduating from Govt. College of Art and Craft, Calcutta, Prakash Karmakar lives and works from Kolkata.

The eclectic tastes of the province from the Far East have for long breathed over to the culinary melting pot of Chennai. Now, with the month long Schezwan food festival that awaits one at Chin Chin, the flavours of the cuisine have perhaps been well mingled in the already miscellaneous brew that the city boasts of. The Residency boasts of good connectivity, with the congestion being sorted out, and what one can perhaps take is a relatively trouble-free ride to their Chinese restaurant where for the whole month of January , Chef Shanmugham rolls out his 25 speciality Schezwan recipes as his flavours of the month. Chef Shan, nicknamed so by his staff, having spent most part of his life in the Far East has for over 17 years donned the Chin Chin hat and with his expertise in the Schezwan cuisine, the restaurant that has been under renovation for about 13 months has seen some new energies.
