After the resounding success of last year`s Kathak workshop on abhinaya, the NCPA invites the redoubtable grandmaster of Kathak, Birju Maharaj, yet again to conduct the second workshop in the series on the `Subtle Nuances of Abhinaya related to Ashta-nayikas`. Representing the eight moods of a woman in love, the ashta-nayikas have been depicted by dancers, documented by scholars and relished by connoisseurs down the ages. This workshop provides a rare opportunity to observe the maestro at close quarters and watch him interpret and process each nayika through his creative imagination. Tracing the journey of the archetypal woman in love, he will highlight how each classical heroine spontaneously evolves and transforms into the other. He will then elaborate on two of them with contrasting dispositions. The minute fluctuations of emotional register - yearning, sorrow, desolation and joy - will be explored with his characteristic refinement and restraint through an extended repertoire of body language, improvisational gestures and stances.

Uzbekistan has inherited an exceptionally rich cultural legacy, dating back thousands of years. Due to its privileged position at the cross-roads of the great antique trading routes, notably the famed Silk Route, its cultural traditions have been enriched by Eastern and Western civilizations. During the last century, ballet and opera, were introduced into the country and in a short period of time, reached a high level of international recognition. The Navoi Opera and Ballet Grand Academic Theatre in Tashkent, named after the famous poet and philosopher Alisher Navoi, is one of the leading centres of performing arts in Central Asia, frequented by several famous conductors, musicians and artistes. It is one of the three theatres out of more than 700 that were given the status of Bolshoi (Big) in the erstwhile Soviet Union. The Company has graced the stages of La Scala, Milan, the Paris Opera, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan and the Bolshoi and Mariynski Theatres. Its wide repertoire, which is growing steadily, ranges from classical favourites such as Swan Lake and Don Quixote to original creations, inspired by ancient Uzbek folk tales. Its performances are rated as among the best in the world.

Dilip Raval, who has studied photography with Ansel Adams, John Sexton and Christopher Burkett, attempts to interpret nature and landscape rather than document merely. The earth is constantly being shaped by water, wind and glaciers, the images in this show covering the underground sandstone slot canyons of Arizona, U.S.A., the geothermal pools of Iceland, glaciers and icebergs in Alaska, Patagonia and Iceland. These are mostly digital images, produced with a Hasselblad 645 camera and Phase one 39-mega pixels digital back. The digital negatives were processed using Adobe Photoshop and printed on Epson archival papers using archival pigment inks.
