DescripciónUzbekistan has inherited an exceptionally rich cultural legacy, dating back thousands of years. Due to its privileged position at the cross-roads of the great antique trading routes, notably the famed Silk Route, its cultural traditions have been enriched by Eastern and Western civilizations. During the last century, ballet and opera, were introduced into the country and in a short period of time, reached a high level of international recognition. The Navoi Opera and Ballet Grand Academic Theatre in Tashkent, named after the famous poet and philosopher Alisher Navoi, is one of the leading centres of performing arts in Central Asia, frequented by several famous conductors, musicians and artistes. It is one of the three theatres out of more than 700 that were given the status of Bolshoi (Big) in the erstwhile Soviet Union. The Company has graced the stages of La Scala, Milan, the Paris Opera, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan and the Bolshoi and Mariynski Theatres. Its wide repertoire, which is growing steadily, ranges from classical favourites such as Swan Lake and Don Quixote to original creations, inspired by ancient Uzbek folk tales. Its performances are rated as among the best in the world.

DescripciónDakshinaChitra celebrates the Marghazi & Village Heritage Festival once again and will comes alive to the rhythms, movements and colours of different folk dances of South India between the 25th dec 2008 – 12th jan 2009. This special festival coincides with the New Year Celebration and has been tailor-made to suit the festive mood and there will be dancing all day – village style. This village festival offers unique opportunity to witness the rich and varied folk art forms of South India at one go. Different styles of folk dances representing the four southern states will perform throughout this season. Chittmela is a traditional folk orchestra popular in the remote southern parts of Karnataka. It is named Chittmela because the drummer while performing uses small footsteps resembling the flight of a butterfluy."Chitte" means butterfly in kanada - hence the name Chittmela. The main performer plays folk melodies in an instrument known as mukhaveena supported by drums and cymbals and other singers and dancers.
