Fue responsable de completar el estudio topogr\u00e1fico de la secci\u00f3n trigonom\u00e9trica a lo largo del arco meridiano desde el sur de la India extendi\u00e9ndose al norte hasta Nepal. Una distancia aproximada de 2400 kil\u00f3metros. El trabajo lo comenz\u00f3 William Lambton en 1802 y fue finalizado casi al final del Siglo.\u00a0El Monte Everest fue nombrado en honor a George Everest por su sucesor Andrew Waugh debido a sus estudios.\u00a0Everest naci\u00f3 en Gwernvale Manor cerca de Crickhowell, en Powys, Gales. Fue bautizado en la iglesia de San Alfege, en Greenwich el 27 de enero de 1791. Tras estudiar en una academia militar en Woolwish, sobresaliendo en matem\u00e1ticas, viaj\u00f3 hacia la India en 1806 como cadete de artiller\u00eda. All\u00ed fue seleccionado por Sir Stamford Raffles para formar parte en el reconocimiento de Java entre 1814 y 1816.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En 1808, comenz\u00f3 a servir como asistente del Coronel Lambton, quien ya hab\u00eda empezado las mediciones trigonom\u00e9tricas del subcontinente en 1806. Despu\u00e9s de la muerte de Lambton en 1823, fue superintendente de perito y en 1830 fue nombrado perito general de la India.\u00a0Se retir\u00f3 en 1843 y se fue a vivir a Inglaterra, donde lleg\u00f3 a ser miembro de la \u00abRoyal Society\u00bb. Fue convertido en caballero real en 1861 y en 1862 fue elegido Vicepresidente de la \u00abRoyal Geographical Society\u00bb. Muri\u00f3 en Greenwich en 1866 y fue enterrado en la iglesia de San Andrews, Hove, cerca de Brighton.
